One of the most easiest ways to make your shop more sustainable is to take your own bags. If you don’t already have a reusable bag, which if you don’t where have you been, you can easily buy one from most shops, including supermarkets.

The sale of reusable bags has meant that in 2021, the use of single-use plastics in supermarkets was reduced by 95%. This has meant less plastic has ended up on landfill, and one bag takes 1,000 years to degrade fully. Plastic bags also produce microplastics as they breakdown, and these microplastics can have detrimental effects on the environment.

When you use your reusable bag, you are preventing the sale of a plastic bag. These bags are great for using again and again, you just need to remember to always have one or two on you when you are out shopping.

Be aware however, that these bags are only sustainable if you use them in a sustainable way. If you use them as you would a single-use plastic bag, then your bag will become unsustainable. The bag will end up on landfill and then will become waste, which will release greenhouse gases and harmful microplastics as it breaks down.

Make sure you use your reusable bag in the way that it was intended, and you will be on your way to make your shopping experience a little more sustainable.
