Introduction
The new global energy map provides a strategic opportunity for Africa to act on its Agenda 2063 for an “Africa We Want”. As a just, equitable and equal economy-wide energy transitions are being supported. These transitions are also respectful of Africa’s population as their social and economic needs will be met. The initiative hopes to improve Africa’s overall access to energy and the to meet the requirements for the energy needed for economic development to increase jobs, low-carbon innovation and energy efficiency, as well as strengthening energy markets, and driving industrialisation.

Different pathways will be needed for different areas of Africa when implementing clean energy transitions. Therefore, the pathways need to be flexible, sustainable, and specific to the country/region they are implemented into.

Objectives

  1. To consolidate and facilitate technical and policy support that will make just and affordable energy transitions in all African countries financially viable, securing access to affordable energy by 2027 for at least 300 million Africans, contributing to SDG 7.1 target of universal access by 2030
  2. By 2027, transition 300 million people towards clean cooking out of the 970 million who do not have access to clean cooking fuels and technologies today, contributing to SDG 7.1 target of universal access by 2030
  3. Transition towards green energy by increasing the share of renewable electricity generation by 25 percentage points by 2027 and obtain a power sector based on renewables by 2063, in line with the “Africa We Want” Agenda

Key elements

  • The initiative will establish a collective leadership voice to promote a holistic approach to energy. The initiative will work towards providing a just and affordable energy transitions, with different pathways. Progress will be monitored through a peer mechanism.
  • Technical assistance, advisory support and policy advice to governments at all levels will be accessible throughout the different stages/phases of the transition pathways.
  • Access to technology and innovative solutions, as well as their transfer, application and development will be provided. This will increase the opportunities that will increase Africa’s low carbon and renewable energy capacity.
