Foreword from Dr. Paul Beers – Head of Sustainability
Green finance is the increase of financial flows from banking, micro-credit, insurance, and investment to give both a decent rate of return and an environmental benefit.
During Cop26 the UK Government committed to becoming the first net zero-aligned financial centre in the world. Sustainable (or Green) finance is a key part of the UK’s climate and environment goals.
In 2021, the UK’s Green Financing Programme was launched that issued green sovereign bonds and retail Green Savings Bonds for the first time. This raised £16.4 billion in its first year to fund projects in 6 areas:
- Clean transportation
- Energy efficiency
- Renewable energy
- Pollution prevention and control
- Living and natural resources
- Climate change adaptation
These government bonds provide long term investment opportunities for pension funds to invest in projects that tackle climate change and fund the transition to a net zero economy.
This focus week will explain all things green finance and how you can adopt sustainable financial practices.
