The agricultural sector emits around 10% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and according to the UN, in 2021 the agri-food system emitted 31% of human caused greenhouse gas emissions.

These emissions are released throughout the food system, from growth on farms, through to production, transportation, being sold and becoming waste in your homes. This mainly occurs in the West, and a large amount of climate finance is invested into the food and agriculture sector.
Small scale agriculture only receives 1.5% of the overall climate finance. Within this percentage small scale farmers, many of which live within the developing world, only receive 7%. This figure is significantly disproportionate as they produce roughly a third of the food that feeds the planet.
COP27 has designated a day to discuss agriculture and part of that day has been set aside to discuss the issues, challenges and solutions to financing the agriculture sector. During the day, those attending will have the opportunity to discuss how to increase climate finance.
The processes within agriculture have been a main cause of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, land degradation and biodiversity loss. COP27 will also see new technologies, initiatives and policies being put into place to help prevent further damage and rebuild where possible.
